Overview
A fast-growing Fintech needed a robust Design System that not only aligned its brand, but also enabled a scalable, consistent expansion of its digital ecosystem.
My mission was to lead a 7‑designer team, facilitate 7 Design Thinking workshops, and build a system that unified 3 sub‑brands into a single library of 30 UI components and 40 variants.
The Challenge
With digital products already in production, the design lacked consistency—creating a fragmented user experience and making it hard to scale.
Ecosystem fragmentation
Live digital products without a unified visual language, creating brand inconsistency and user confusion.
Compromised scalability
Without a baseline system, every new product or feature required redesigning from scratch—raising costs and slowing the team down.
Core question: How do we design a flexible, robust system that supports growth while integrating 3 sub‑brands?
Strategy & Build
I mapped all stakeholders and facilitated 7 Design Thinking workshops to understand not only needs, but also concerns about adopting a Design System.
System principles
I defined clear principles inspired by leading Design Systems: consistency, accessibility, and modularity. These became the compass for every design decision.
Style guidelines
I created detailed guidelines covering typography, color palettes, and iconography—ensuring every visual element contributed to a cohesive, accessible experience.
Before/after cases
I presented before/after comparisons to prove value—showing how the system solved existing issues and enabled new possibilities.
High‑Impact Solutions
1. Design System foundations
I built a solid foundation inspired by best‑in‑class Design Systems, with clear principles guiding every decision.
- 30 master UI components with modular architecture.
- 40 variants covering states and interactions.
- 3 sub‑brands unified in one coherent system.
2. Scrum integration & tooling
I aligned the workflow with agile methodologies (Scrum), making the Design System a constant, integral part of product delivery.
This allowed the system to evolve organically without requiring a dedicated maintenance team.
3. Documentation & governance
I created detailed guidance on how to use components and underlying principles, ensuring consistent application across products.
From design tokens to accessibility guidelines and Storybook, documentation was built so design and engineering could work in full sync.
Tangible results
Design System unificado creado desde cero, cubriendo 3 sub-marcas distintas.
Componentes UI maestros con 40 variantes que aceleran los tiempos de desarrollo.
Workshops de Design Thinking facilitados con stakeholders de múltiples áreas.
Key deliverables
Style guidelines
Visual identity, design principles, tone of voice, and communication style.
Component library
30 components with 40 variants, patterns, and responsive layouts.
Design tokens
Technical specs and tokens for design‑to‑dev integration.
Storybook documentation
Component usage guidance, interaction, accessibility, and governance.
Learnings & leadership
-
01
Continuous collaboration & communication
The biggest lesson: a successful Design System depends on adoption and shared ownership across teams. Without ongoing communication, it won’t thrive.
-
02
The system is a living product
A Design System is not a one‑off project. It must evolve with the company and products—so I planned maintenance and continuous evolution from day one.
-
03
Simplicity and coherence as the baseline
Benchmarking against leading systems confirmed it: success comes from simplicity. A complex system nobody uses is worse than a simple one adopted by everyone.
